To add the return of a dependant to the parent’s return, proceed as follows:
- Display the return of one of the parents.
- In the appropriate copy of the Form Family Profile (Jump Code: FAM), select the Add a dependant's return check box.
The Add a Dependant dialog box is displayed. Click one of the following links to find out how to continue the operation according to the type of return to add.
To add the non-existent return of a dependant
- Click New return to create the dependant’s return directly in the client file, then click OK.
Once the operation is completed, the Form Identification and Other Client Information (Jump Code: ID) of the added dependant is displayed and the dependant’s return is in the client file.
Identification data previously entered on the Form Family Profile for that dependant (e.g. name, birth date, disability info) as well as any tuition information will be transferred to the new return automatically.
The supporting person’s address will default as the address for the new dependant’s return. If the dependant resides elsewhere, you will need to modify the address in the dependant’s Identification form.
To add the existing current-year return in a separate file
- Click Current year return, then OK.
The Open dialog box is displayed.
- Select the dependant’s client file.
The dependant’s client file must be closed to perform this operation.
If the operation is made from a planner’s return, in the Type of file box, select the “Taxprep Files” file type to add the current-year dependant’s return without the roll forward of the permanent data being made.
- Click OK.
- Click Yes to delete the dependant’s client file.
Click No to save the dependant’s client file.
When adding the current-year dependant’s return to the parents' planner returns, you do not have to answer to the question since the dependant’s client file cannot be deleted.
